A debate titled “Protecting International Justice and Its Institutions, Especially the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice” took place at the European Parliament in Strasbourg during a plenary session. PiS MEP Małgorzata Gosiewska spoke during the debate.
Małgorzata Gosiewska emphasized that the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice form the foundation of the global legal system, which, in theory, provides the international community with the tools to prevent violence and effectively punish criminals. “Meanwhile, here in Europe, Russia is committing crimes against the Ukrainian people, and the Lukashenko regime is persecuting Belarusians fighting for freedom,” she emphasized. The PiS MEP noted that, as the author of the 2015 “2015 ‘Report on War Crimes Committed by Russians in the Donbas’,” and as an expert on Eastern European issues, she has for years unsuccessfully demanded that criminals be brought to justice and that the fate of their victims be addressed. “Unfortunately, the perpetrators remain unpunished, as the ability of the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) to take action is weak and ineffective, largely due to the politicization of both institutions and pressure from the aggressors,” she stated. According to the Polish politician, it is necessary to improve the efficiency and independence of these institutions’ operations and to streamline the mechanisms for enforcing their rulings. “Protecting international justice is key to ensuring social justice, but it requires global cooperation, depoliticization, commitment, and consistency,” Gosiewska believes.
