Małgorzata Gosiewska: “Georgia has reached a critical juncture—either the path of European values will prevail, or the Kremlin’s criminal regime will”

Małgorzata Gosiewska: “Georgia has reached a critical juncture—either the path of European values will prevail, or the Kremlin’s criminal regime will”

During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, a debate took place on the deteriorating political situation in Georgia. PiS MEP Małgorzata Gosiewska took part in the discussion.

Małgorzata Gosiewska noted that for the past two months, Georgia has been engulfed in mass protests against a brutal, anti-democratic government that has rigged yet another election and—a move that sparked the strongest opposition —suspended accession talks with the European Union. She reported that the authorities are responding to the protests with brutal repression. “Georgia has reached a critical juncture—either the path of European values will prevail, or the Kremlin’s criminal regime will, stated the ECR MEP.

The Polish politician argued that the European Parliament cannot stand idly by and outlined the actions it can take. “We must firmly demand sanctions against the oligarch Ivanishvili, his associates in business, and Georgian politicians; the international isolation of the current government and parliament; support for independent Georgian media; aid directed toward pro-European organizations and independent groups, and the release of former President Saakashvili and other political prisoners. We must also promote a positive image of the European Union in the face of Moscow’s propaganda, the MEP urged, calling for decisive action.
