In Strasbourg, during the ongoing plenary session of the European Parliament, a debate was held on the situation in Azerbaijan, specifically regarding violations of human rights and international law, as well as Azerbaijan’s relations with Armenia. PiS MEP Małgorzata Gosiewska spoke during the discussion.
Małgorzata Gosiewska said that the war over Nagorno-Karabakh had caused a massive humanitarian crisis, particularly affecting children. In this context, she noted that three years ago, as Speaker of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, she invited children from the Karabakh region to Poland—orphans and half-orphans whose families had lost their homes and livelihoods as a result of the hostilities. “These children still need support to develop normally,” she noted. She recalled that Azerbaijan had regained control of the region, and that a blockade had been imposed on the Armenian population, leading to shortages of food and medicine as well as power outages, which resulted in an exodus of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, including children. “For children, the loss of loved ones, and then their family home, means the loss of everything they have known and loved so far,” she said, commenting on their difficult situation. The Polish politician also noted that although the conflict has officially ended, its effects are still being felt. “The international community has a duty to advocate for the observance of human rights—especially the rights of children—and to provide them with ongoing assistance,” she urged.
