During a joint meeting of the Security and Defense Committee and the Special Committee on the Democratic Shield, an exchange of views took place with Commission Vice-President Henna Virkunnen. Mariusz Kamiński participated in the discussion on behalf of the ECR Group.
“In an interview on March 5 with Deutsche Welle, you said that in the coming weeks you would organize a roundtable discussion with representatives of the Tusk government and certain NGOs in connection with the presidential election in Poland,” – said Mariusz Kamiński.
“Your statement caused a storm in Poland. It was perceived as an attempt to interfere in the election process. After all, you are by no means objective. As far back as five years ago, during the previous election campaign, you personally supported the Civic Platform (PO) candidate R. Trzaskowski, who is running again in this election," – Kamiński pointed out, noting that there is no treaty basis for the European Commission to organize such roundtable discussions in member states, especially during election campaigns.
“Do you even know what the situation in Poland is like right now? Have you heard about the scale of repression against democratic opposition activists? About the mass stripping of parliamentary immunity from opposition lawmakers? About the arrests, searches, and interrogations?” — the Law and Justice politician asked.
“Have you heard about the tragic death of Ms. Barbara Skrzypek, a close associate of Jarosław Kaczyński? She died a few days ago of a heart attack following an interrogation at the prosecutor’s office,” MEP Mariusz Kamiński reported.
“An authoritarian regime is taking shape in Poland right before your eyes. Human rights and the rule of law are being violated. This is happening with your consent, and you bear political and moral responsibility for it,” the Polish politician concluded.
