Marlena Maląg asks the European Commission how it intends to protect European farmers from the harmful consequences of the EU-Mercosur agreement

Following the conclusion of negotiations on the controversial EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement, PiS MEP Marlena Maląg submitted a question to the European Commission regarding the measures it has taken to protect European agriculture.

"On December 6, negotiations on the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement concluded. In Poland, as well as in other countries with a large agricultural sector, this is causing great concern over increased imports of cheaper products, as well as lower food safety standards. European farmers are also grappling with overly stringent requirements imposed by the Green Deal, and in Poland, they face the additional challenge of increased imports of agricultural goods from Ukraine. Polish farmers also fear the “destruction of Polish forests and hunting” as well as potential damage to the Polish economy. “All these factors are leading to numerous protests and efforts to block the ratification of the agreement with Mercosur, the letter to the European Commission states.

In light of the above, the PiS MEP wanted to know how the European Commission intends to protect the competitiveness of European agriculture vis-à-vis this new partner. Furthermore, Marlena Maląg asked whether the Commission would offer compensation measures for farmers, especially those from countries with large agricultural sectors, and whether it plans to implement protective measures for European farmers.
