PiS MEP Marlena Maląg submitted a question today to the European Commission regarding the situation in Poland concerning mass layoffs, violations of workers’ rights, and collective bargaining agreements in the context of the implementation of Directive (EU) 2022/2041.
"According to information from the Ministry of Family, Labor, and Social Policy, in the first two months of 2025 alone, mass layoffs affecting nearly 15,000 workers were reported. This applies both to sectors in which Poland was a leader on the EU market, such as the furniture industry, as well as to strategic state-owned companies and the transportation sector. In many cases, there are also serious concerns regarding respect for workers’ rights and collective bargaining agreements. Meanwhile, in accordance with the applicable Directive (EU) 2022/2041, member states are required to promote and strengthen collective bargaining agreements—yet according to various sources, only 10 to 15 percent of workers in Poland are covered by collective bargaining agreements,” the parliamentary inquiry states.
In light of the above, the PiS MEP asks whether the European Commission is monitoring the growing number of mass layoffs in Poland. Marlena Maląg also wants to know whether the Commission recognizes a violation of the obligation to promote collective bargaining agreements under Directive (EU) 2022/2041, and whether, in connection with the layoffs, the European Commission has received any applications regarding the possibility of supporting workers under the European Globalization Adjustment Fund.
