During a session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, a debate took place on the need to support rail travel and the railway sector in Europe. Marlena Maląg, a PiS MEP and the initiator of the debate, spoke on behalf of the ECR Group.
Marlena Maląg stated that the economic downturn and the deteriorating financial performance of many state-owned companies in the rail freight sector require a thorough analysis and recapitalization as a form of investment support.
She noted with concern that the Polish company PKP CARGO S.A., which is undergoing restructuring, is “taking the easy way out.” It is laying off employees en masse, and the new management comments on this by saying that it is “releasing employees into the labor market.” “Trade unions report that pregnant women, people approaching retirement age, and union activists are being thrown out onto the street,” the MEP said. She emphasized that actions that also violate the principles of social dialogue cannot be tolerated. She found it encouraging that some of the discriminated-against employees are finding justice in the courts, where rulings and judgments are being handed down in their favor.
“There is no consent—nor can there be—for such actions. We stand in solidarity with the rail freight industry,” the Polish politician said, expressing her support.
