During the ongoing plenary session at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, a debate took place on the findings of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women regarding abortion laws in Poland. PiS MEPs Marlena Maląg and Małgorzata Gosiewska spoke during the discussion.
Marlena Maląg clearly emphasized that Poland is a democratic state governed by the rule of law, guaranteeing equality for women and men in every area. She noted that alleging a lack of equality between women and men before the law—that is, alleged discrimination against women regarding their freedom and informed choice to have children—is a significant abuse.
“Once again, under the guise of fighting discrimination, ideological content is being introduced that undermines Christian values and promotes liberal policies, without respect for the political systems of member states, their choices, and their laws,” stated the Polish politician.
The MEP pointed out that abortion is “a tragedy for the mother and the murder of a child.” “The EU should focus on measures to protect mothers so that they do not have to resort to such a dramatic step. Abortion is nothing more than a form of discrimination that, above all, disregards the principle of protecting the life of the unborn child. Everyone should have the inalienable right to life from conception to natural death,” said Marlena Maląg.
Małgorzata Gosiewska stated that in Poland, women have the right to an abortion when their life or health is at risk, as well as in the case of a pregnancy resulting from a criminal act. She outlined the current abortion laws because, as she stated, “many lies have been told here on this issue.”
The MEP also recalled that the last attempt to liberalize abortion laws during Donald Tusk’s administration failed, adding that this best illustrates Polish society’s attitude toward the issue.
“The fact that measures are being taken to protect animals while the protection of a fundamental human right—the right to life—is being overlooked speaks volumes about the current state of Europe,” the MEP stated. As she noted, it is significant that an unborn child has legal capacity, yet its right to life is being undermined. “Instead of fighting for the legalization of abortion, we should focus on how to help single mothers, how to raise awareness among men so they do not abandon their partners in the face of an unwanted pregnancy, and how to motivate society to care for the well-being of children, who are our future,” argued the Polish politician. “You’d do better to address the discrimination against women who have not yet been born, because they, too, have a right to life,” she appealed.
