Today in Strasbourg, during the ongoing plenary session of the European Parliament, a debate was held on the establishment of a loan cooperation mechanism for Ukraine and the provision of exceptional macro-financial assistance to Ukraine. PiS MEP Michał Dworczyk spoke during the discussion.
The PiS MEP recalled that since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and part of the Donbas, Ukraine has been facing Russian aggression. “For most of this period, Western countries—primarily Germany, but not only Germany—have been conducting lucrative business with Russia over the heads of Ukraine and other countries in the region, funneling billions of euros into the Russian budget,” Dworczyk noted. He added that although gas no longer flows through the Northern Pipeline and further sanctions are being imposed on the Russian Federation, we are still “dealing with a game of appearances.” “We are not decisive enough, and this is preventing Ukraine from winning,” the Polish politician believes.
The MEP expressed support for a loan mechanism using frozen Russian assets, but emphasized that he opposes the proposal for the European Union to grant Ukraine a loan with recourse. According to Dworczyk, the stability of the mechanism would be ensured by the automatic extension of sanctions until Russia ceases to violate international law. “Ukraine needs our support more than ever,” the MEP noted. Dworczyk also criticized last week’s meeting of the leaders of the U.S., Germany, France, and the United Kingdom on the subject of Ukraine. “The fact that representatives of the region whose future is at stake in this conflict are being sidelined is certainly not a step in the right direction,” he emphasized.
