A debate titled “A Stronger Europe for Safer Products, Better Consumer Protection, and Curbing Unfair Competition” took place in Strasbourg during the European Parliament’s plenary session. The discussion focused in particular on strengthening EU oversight of e-commerce and imports. Piotr Müller, a PiS MEP, spoke during the debate.
Piotr Müller emphasized that regulations concerning product safety in Europe are extremely important. “On the one hand, they ensure consumer safety, and on the other, they standardize certain types of manufacturing practices in Europe,” the MEP commented. He also drew attention to growing competition, particularly from Asian markets, while expressing concern that these regulations would not, in practice, apply to products originating outside the EU.
In this regard, he asked Commissioner Reynders what remedial measures could be taken to ensure effective oversight of products originating from those markets. The Polish politician stated that a good solution would be to allocate additional funds in the new budget framework, primarily for national agencies and institutions, because—as he argued—it is national institutions, rather than European ones, that most often monitor product quality.
