Today in Strasbourg, during the ongoing plenary session of the European Parliament, the trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur was discussed. ECR Group Chair Patryk Jaki called for a withdrawal from this harmful agreement, which “will destroy European agriculture.”
Patryk Jaki stated that everything being said about the agreement with Mercosur is exactly like the situation with Nord Stream. He recalled that at the time, many people warned that giving up our own strategic energy resources in favor of importing gas from abroad would yield short-term gains for a few, but would end in tragedy in the long run. As he noted, history is repeating itself today. “You want to destroy European agriculture so you can sell cars, because they’ve ceased to be competitive—in part because of you, because of the Green Deal,” said the PiS MEP, emphasizing that the problem is simply that agriculture is not just about food and jobs, but above all about security. “And stop lying that this has no impact on agriculture—if that were the case, you wouldn’t be proposing any compensation packages. So why these packages?” asked the Polish politician.
The ECR Group Chair stated that there is a mistaken assumption “that food can always be imported into Europe.” “You thought the same thing about gas, and what happened? Unless you’re assuming that Europeans will ‘always manage somehow’ because you’re adding insects to our food. But in reality, it’s you who need to be held accountable, not the farmers! We should thank them, because we have the best food in the world. And we won’t let you destroy that!” said Jaki.
