Today in Strasbourg, during the ongoing plenary session of the European Parliament, a debate took place on the misuse of new technologies to manipulate and radicalize young people through hate speech and anti-democratic discourse. Piotr Müller, a PiS MEP, spoke during the discussion.
Piotr Müller emphasized that there is no doubt that we must address the issue of protection against content that may be harmful or have a negative impact on society, and in particular on the upbringing of children. “However, in this House and in the European Commission, this issue is very often used as a pretext for taking far-reaching measures that restrict freedom of expression, introduce preventive censorship, or propose the elimination of encryption on messaging apps such as Signal, WhatsApp, Messenger, etc.," he noted.
The PiS MEP said that the European Commission recently presented a proposal, known as “Chat Control,” which aims to create a Chinese-style internet by eliminating encrypted communication and implementing preventive scanning of citizens’ content. The Polish politician demanded a clear statement from the European Commission that this dangerous proposal would be withdrawn. Müller also asked whether the EC had proposed illegal agreements with X and Elon Musk regarding the censorship of published content.
