During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, a joint debate on defense was held, including a discussion of reports by the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense regarding the removal of barriers in the single market for defense and flagship European projects of common interest in the field of defense. MEPs Michał Dworczyk and Adam Bielan of Law and Justice emphasized that that strengthening Europe’s security should be based primarily on a tangible increase in the defense capabilities of member states and on cooperation within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Michał Dworczyk pointed out that the current security situation in Europe is largely a consequence of years of underestimating the threat posed by Russia.
“Another debate on defense during this term confirms what Poland has been saying for a long time. The Russian Federation has never been a partner of Europe. Unfortunately, our warnings about its aggressive actions have most often been ignored,” he emphasized.
The MEP pointed out that for years, Europe had been dominated by a short-sighted and self-serving policy in which economic interests with Russia were prioritized over the continent’s security.
“The best example of this short-sightedness, national self-interest, and greed was the Nord Stream gas pipeline project carried out by Germany and Russia,” he noted.
The Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense stressed that while it is necessary to strengthen European defense capabilities, the direction of change proposed by the European Commission raises serious concerns.
“Under the banner of supporting the European defense industry and strengthening cooperation lies growing pressure to transfer powers from member states to the EU level, including in the area of security and defense,” he stated.
In his view, the concept of a single defense market in such a sensitive sector could lead primarily to the strengthening of the largest defense contractors.
The MEP also highlighted the need for tangible support for countries on the European Union’s eastern flank.
“European security must be based on genuine solidarity—above all, on urgent and dedicated support for the countries on the eastern flank that guard Europe’s borders,” he emphasized.
Adam Bielan also spoke during the debate, noting that the growing awareness among European politicians of the threat posed by Russia is a positive sign.
“It’s good that many in Europe have finally begun to take defense issues seriously and recognize that the main threat to our continent comes from the East, from Russia,” he said.
The MEP emphasized, however, that strengthening Europe’s defense must not lead to a weakening of transatlantic cooperation.
“Europe’s security is built within the framework of the transatlantic alliance. NATO remains the foundation of our common defense system, which is why we should avoid duplicating its structures,” he noted.
Bielan also pointed out that instead of focusing on creating new administrative structures, the European Union should concentrate on tangibly strengthening its military capabilities and industrial potential.
“Europe needs defense capabilities, not more bureaucracy,” he concluded.
