During a plenary session of the European Parliament, as part of a debate titled “Building a Stronger European Defense in Light of an Increasingly Unstable International Context,” Law and Justice MEPs Michał Dworczyk and Beata Szydło emphasized that Europe’s security must be based on the armies of sovereign nation-states and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Michał Dworczyk pointed out that the concept of a European army, pushed by some EU officials and supporters of federalization, is dangerous for the countries on the eastern flank. “It will weaken NATO by dispersing resources and duplicating structures, and will further undermine the real security guarantees that are crucial for our region.” Referring to the long-standing neglect of defense spending by some of the wealthiest European NATO member states, the vice-chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defense emphasized that “the concept of a European army is, in reality, a pretext for those who have avoided real responsibility for security for years.” He noted that the priority should be fulfilling commitments within the Alliance and strengthening defense capabilities on NATO’s eastern flank, rather than implementing political projects that merely give the impression of action.
Beata Szydło pointed out that the debate on European security cannot be based on illusions. “Only sovereign states can ensure Europe’s security today. Strengthening NATO remains the foundation of the security of our countries and the entire Union,” the MEP emphasized. Szydło added that joint European defense initiatives, such as a common army or arms production, have so far failed to yield the expected economic or strategic results; therefore, we must return to proven mechanisms based on national sovereignty and international alliances.
PiS MEPs unanimously emphasized that, in the face of growing international instability, concrete measures to strengthen Europe’s security should focus on NATO’s eastern flank and specific alliance commitments, rather than on ideological political projects.
