During the plenary session in Strasbourg, a debate was held on a topical issue at the request of the S&D Group, titled “State Violence in Minneapolis and the Rule of Law in the United States.” Law and Justice MEPs—Jacek Ozdoba and Joachim Brudziński—criticized the legitimacy of holding this debate, pointing to the double standards applied by the parliamentary majority.
Jacek Ozdoba argued that the European Parliament should not interfere in the internal affairs of the United States, especially given that—as he noted—there are serious problems related to the rule of law and freedom of speech within the European Union itself.
“The European Parliament is debating the rule of law in the United States, while in Europe we are facing a serious crisis in this area. You are attacking Donald Trump because he exposes your hypocrisy,” said the MEP.
Ozdoba emphasized that the measures taken by the U.S. administration regarding immigration policy were announced during the election campaign and received a democratic mandate from voters.
“Americans knew what the promises were regarding mass deportations of people residing illegally in the U.S. It was the voters’ decision. So why is the European Parliament interfering in the affairs of a sovereign state?” he asked.
He also noted that a state has the right and the obligation to enforce its laws against individuals residing illegally on its territory.
Joachim Brudziński drew attention to the security situation in Europe, citing the tragic events at the Polish border. “In June 2024, a Polish soldier, Mariusz Sitek, was tragically killed when he was stabbed by an illegal migrant during an attempt to forcibly cross the border. In 2024 alone, more than 50 Polish officers were injured,” he recalled.
The MEP pointed out that acts of violence committed by undocumented migrants are occurring in many European cities, yet the left—in his view—focuses on criticizing the United States.
“Leave the United States alone. Deal with the real security problems in Europe,” he urged.
Brudziński also assessed that the American democratic system and the justice system function stably, whereas in some European Union countries, state institutions are becoming politicized. He also addressed the situation in Poland, pointing to the proceedings against officers defending the EU’s external border.
PiS MEPs emphasized that the European Parliament should focus on strengthening the security of member states’ citizens and on resolving real problems within the European Union, rather than engaging in politically motivated debates concerning third countries.
