During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, in a debate titled “Systematic oppression, inhumane conditions, and arbitrary detentions by the regime in Iran,” as part of the debates on violations of human rights, democratic principles, and the rule of law, ECR MEP Arkadiusz Mularczyk took the floor. The PiS politician called for uncompromising sanctions against the Iranian regime, for it to be recognized as a real threat to international security, and for full solidarity with the Iranian people in their struggle to overthrow the Ayatollahs’ regime.
The PiS MEP emphasized the dramatic scale of the repression carried out by the authorities in Tehran. He pointed to mass executions, arbitrary detentions, and torture inflicted on Iranian citizens. “In recent weeks, the regime in Iran has carried out a massacre on an unprecedented scale. This regime will stop at nothing to maintain its power,” he noted.
Arkadiusz Mularczyk firmly emphasized that the international community cannot allow a situation in which Iranian ayatollahs acquire nuclear weapons. He assessed that the decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization and to expand sanctions against Iran are steps in the right direction, though—as he noted—they were taken too late.
The PiS MEP also criticized the nuclear agreement with Iran, which was pushed through by the Barack Obama administration and some European Union member states. In his view, it was a serious strategic mistake that enabled the regime to obtain billions of dollars, strengthen its power structures, and increase funding for destabilizing activities in the region. “This agreement has brought neither peace nor security. On the contrary—it has accelerated the nuclear program and strengthened the state’s repressive apparatus,” he noted.
According to Arkadiusz Mularczyk, the European Union’s response should consist of ruthless, devastating sanctions and decisive actions aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear program. He emphasized that a tough and unyielding policy toward Tehran, based on real political and economic pressure, is necessary.
The MEP also expressed solidarity with the Iranian people, noting that the fall of the Ayatollahs’ regime is the only chance for millions of Iranians to live normal, free lives. “Solidarity with the Iranian people must lead to the fall of this regime. This is the only path to freedom and dignity for millions of people,” he concluded.
