Today in Strasbourg, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, a debate took place on extreme weather events threatening local communities and agriculture in the EU in the era of climate change. During the discussion, which included Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski, PiS MEPs Anna Zalewska and Dominik Tarczyński took the floor.
Anna Zalewska noted that she comes from Lower Silesia—an area ravaged by disaster, where “floodwaters are currently sweeping through.” She reported that in some places, people are cleaning up and discovering the full extent of the tragedy, while in others they are still waiting for the floodwaters to arrive. “It is my duty to stand by them and fight for every penny that will be needed today, next week, in 5 years, and in 10 years,” the MEP emphasized. Zalewska also spoke out on behalf of farmers. She praised the direct payment mechanism for areas that have been flooded. However, she stressed that farmers in southern Poland have lost the ability to harvest their crops, livestock farmers have lost their feed, and some animals did not survive the flood; therefore, additional aid funds are needed. We already know that there are no funds available in the Solidarity Fund this year, while for next year, only one billion euros is earmarked for all countries. “We need the support of the Committee on Agriculture to specifically allocate funds for farmers,” she appealed.
Dominik Tarczyński emphasized that what is currently happening in Poland is a tremendous tragedy. He stated that these massive floods are occurring, among other reasons, because the madness of eco-terrorism has been allowed to run rampant. “The left, which supports and has supported eco-terrorist organizations—for that is what they must be called—organizations that opposed the construction of flood-control infrastructure—these are the people responsible for what is happening now in Poland and this part of Europe,” — he emphasized. The PiS MEP referred to the scandalous report that circulated in the European media, alleging that German intelligence had attempted to recruit an environmental activist to protest against investments in Poland. “This is a war between intelligence agencies, and eco-terrorism is being used against the development of countries like Poland. Thank you, Commissioner, for standing up for common sense in Europe. We conservatives are the guardians of reason, and we will call a spade a spade. Stop eco-terrorism!” said the PiS politician.
