Today in Strasbourg, during the European Parliament’s plenary session, a debate took place on freedom of assembly in Hungary. PiS MEPs Arkadiusz Mularczyk, Jacek Ozdoba, and Tobiasz Bocheński spoke during the discussion.
Arkadiusz Mularczyk said that today’s debate should have a different title. “It does not concern freedom of assembly, but rather freedom from having to witness public indecency and depravity,” he stated.
In this context, he mentioned scenes that took place during a similar parade held just a few days ago in Warsaw, in which the unsuccessful Polish presidential candidate Rafał Trzaskowski participated, who, during the presidential campaign, sharply distanced himself from LGBT movements, aware of just how unpopular the actions of such activists are. The MEP explained that the parade included, among others, half-naked men, “who, in the presence of children, engaged in acts too indecent to mention in this Chamber,” as well as men dressed as caricatures of women—so-called drag queens. “The biggest ‘sensation,’ however, was caused by Satanists, including a person dressed as a demon whose horns were replaced by imitations of the legs of an aborted child,” he added.
“I therefore ask, esteemed Committee, are these the ‘European values’ that you are trying to impose on the citizens of the member states? Of course, only outside of the pre-election period,” Mularczyk mused.
Jacek Ozdoba emphasized: “The Middle East is burning, Ukraine is burning, we have a migration crisis, an economic crisis, we have no weapons, and you’re debating the fact that Orbán banned children from participating in a parade where men walk around in thongs and muzzles.” The politician stated that “it’s probably normal to protect children from corruption.”
“Instead of focusing on real debates and real problems, you’re preoccupied with something that’s all in your heads,” said Ozdoba, adding that he sees no need to “debate someone’s sexual preferences.” He emphasized that by protecting the youngest from such images and negative stimuli, Hungary simply wants to ensure children’s right to develop. The PiS politician stated that “this is a red herring” and called for addressing “Europe’s real problems, not nonsense.”
Tobiasz Bocheński stated that “the Left and the Eurocrats have been putting on a circus in this chamber regarding Hungary for years.” “You’ve found a scapegoat because you don’t like the election results. You represent a neocolonial contempt for people with differing views. You seem to think you have some kind of legitimacy to lecture the nations of Europe on what they may and may not do. Let me tell you: you have neither that right nor even that legitimacy,” the PiS politician emphasized.
The MEP stated that it is “unbearable” to witness such conceited and arrogant tirades directed at the Hungarian people, who have a tradition of freedom as long-standing as that of Poland or England. He recalled that when Hungary was independent, freedom flourished there—the 13th-century Golden Bull was in force. “Left-wing ideologues—leave Hungary alone,” Bocheński appealed.
