The European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice, and Home Affairs (LIBE) adopted, with 47 votes in favor and only 13 against, an important amendment by MEP Jadwiga Wiśniewska to the EC budget discharge resolution, calling on the Commission to provide significant financial support to member states for the physical protection of the Union’s external borders. This is a crucial commitment for EU border countries such as Poland, which, by building and maintaining physical barriers, protects Europe from a hybrid attack by Lukashenko’s regime.
“The methods used by illegal migrants are becoming increasingly brutal, and the costs of effectively protecting the EU’s external border are rising. The EU’s border states must be given priority support on the basis of solidarity, as it is on their shoulders that the fight against the instrumentalization of migration and the task of ensuring Europe’s security rest,” emphasized the PiS MEP.
When tabling her amendment, MEP Jadwiga Wiśniewska referred to the European Council’s conclusions of February 9, 2023, in which member states explicitly called on the European Commission to rapidly mobilize EU funds to ensure adequate border infrastructure. As she noted, current support from the Integrated Border Management Fund is insufficient, and funds must be directed specifically toward the construction of physical barriers, which today are the only effective means of protecting the EU’s borders.
“Secure external borders mean security for Europe and open internal borders, without the need to restrict the free movement of people or effectively dismantle the Schengen Area—something we have unfortunately witnessed in recent months, particularly on the part of Germany,” – said the author of the amendment.
