In Strasbourg, during a plenary session of the European Parliament, a debate was held on fulfilling commitments and providing military aid to Ukraine. PiS MEP Witold Waszczykowski spoke on the matter.
“Aid to Ukraine means curbing Russian imperialism, which threatens all of Europe. This aid is not being blocked by Orbán or Trump. Adequate aid is not coming from Europe. Aid to Ukraine is being held hostage by the lack of a European decision on Russia’s future in Europe. As a result, Europe lacks a widely accepted concept for the conditions under which the Russian-Ukrainian war should end. Specific military aid is needed to defeat Russia and enable Ukraine to reclaim its lost regions. Other forms of aid, however, are needed only to defend against further advances by the Russian army. The lack of a European vision regarding Russia’s future means that weapons are being provided to Ukraine solely to contain Russia. This is a recipe for Ukraine’s downfall and a continued threat to Europe. Europe’s procrastination stems from the fact that in several Western countries, the belief persists that Russia is an indispensable piece of the European puzzle, particularly in economic terms. This is evident in the process of enacting economic sanctions, which are designed so as not to destroy the Russian economy or its ties with Western countries. It is also evident in the arms supplies to Ukraine, which are not intended to inflict damage on Russian territory. Thus, it is not Budapest but Berlin that is holding back adequate military support for Ukraine. At the same time, the war has exposed the weakness of the European defense industry, which is unable to switch to wartime production even within two years. “It’s time to put an end to dreams of autonomy and green revolutions. It’s time for tough Realpolitik,” commented Witold Waszczykowski.
