Ryszard Czarnecki on the Situation in Serbia

Ryszard Czarnecki on the Situation in Serbia

A discussion on the situation in Serbia following the country’s elections took place at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. PiS MEP Ryszard Czarnecki spoke during the debate.

“It must be stated very clearly—and this may have been lacking—that Serbia is a country at the center of a geopolitical struggle between the West and Russia,” said the former vice president of the European Parliament. He pointed out that although there are many Serbs who want to be closer to Moscow than to the European Union, the EU should strive to Westernize Serbia, rather than turn its back on the country and effectively push it toward Moscow. The Polish politician believes that, with the interests of the West and the European Union in mind, the former approach is far preferable. “Of course, we can and should critically assess various aspects of Serbian democracy, but we should not suddenly lose sight of the geopolitical interest, which is the most important,” he said. “We must be open to Serbia; we must admit it to the European Union as soon as possible, argued Ryszard Czarnecki.
