PiS MEP Beata Szydło submitted a question to the European Commission regarding drastic cuts in fertilizer production and the closure of production facilities at Grupa Azoty companies.
The former Polish prime minister stated that Europe, including Poland, has been and continues to be flooded with fertilizers from Russia and Belarus, produced using cheap Russian natural gas. She noted that Polish producers, including Grupa Azoty—Europe’s second-largest chemical company—are unable to compete with this. The MEP explained that the suspension of fertilizer production at Grupa Azoty companies contributed to a lack of demand for sulfur, the primary raw material used in fertilizer production. She pointed out that this led to the closure of hundreds of fertilizer production facilities and companies, as well as mass layoffs.
The MEP stated that, as a result, it is necessary to reinstate protective tariffs on food and fertilizers that are flowing unchecked into Europe, including Poland, and pose a real threat to the continued existence of Grupa Azoty, and, above all, to Europe’s food security.
In this regard, the Polish politician asked the European Commission about the measures it is taking to counter the monopolization of the fertilizer market by Russia and Belarus.
She also wanted to know when tariffs would be imposed on fertilizers of Russian and Belarusian origin.
