Today in Strasbourg, during the ongoing plenary session of the European Parliament, a debate took place on strengthening the position of farmers and rural communities, with a particular focus on dialogue aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture in the EU and fair wages for farmers. PiS MEP Beata Szydło spoke during the discussion.
Beata Szydło pointed out that many fine words expressing concern for the fate of European farmers are currently being spoken in the European Parliament. “I think you’ve already understood that farmers didn’t come to Brussels last week, or to Strasbourg yesterday, and haven’t been protesting for many weeks in Germany and other countries to express support for your policies—quite the opposite,” said the former head of the Polish government, adding that such a protest will also take place in Poland on Friday.
The MEP noted that declarations of support for farmers and the supposed concern for their plight from politicians associated with Manfred Weber’s party (EPP) or the Socialists sound particularly strange. “What is happening right now—the destruction of European agriculture and small businesses—is your responsibility,” she told Ursula von der Leyen and Frans Timmermans. In this context, the MEP pointed to a decision by the European Commission, which yesterday published a proposal to reduce emissions by 90 percent by 2040. “Who do you think will benefit from this—farmers and entrepreneurs?” asked the PiS MEP.
