PiS MEP Jadwiga Wiśniewska submitted a parliamentary question to the European Commission regarding the crisis in the steel sector and its implications for defense.
"In connection with the European Commission’s publication of the White Paper on defense and its proposal that 65 percent of funds from defense loans be allocated to components sourced from the EU, the steel industry is becoming crucial in ensuring an adequate material base for future defense programs,” the MEP emphasized in her letter. As Wiśniewska noted, the EU steel industry is, unfortunately, in a deep crisis and is facing many difficulties, such as rising energy costs, rising imports from third countries, tariffs imposed by the U.S., as well as challenges related to climate policy, including, above all, the ETS system, “without the suspension of which no real improvement in the industry’s situation is possible.”
In light of the above, and given the strategic importance of the steel industry for Europe’s security, Wiśniewska requests that the European Commission indicate whether and when it will suspend the “ETS system, which is harmful to the industry,” as well as what long-term measures it intends to take to protect the European steel industry from unfair trade competition.
