Kosma Złotowski: “The implementation of the Single European Sky must not come at the expense of further stripping Member States of their powers.”

During a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Kosma Złotowski spoke during a debate on the reform of the regulations governing the EU’s Single European Sky. The PiS MEP criticized the proposal, noting that it represents another step toward the centralization of EU power.

Kosma Złotowski noted that control over one’s own territory, including its airspace, is one of the most important attributes of any state’s sovereignty. He emphasized that the ability to make independent decisions in this area is a fundamental issue and also concerns the right to shape the administrative framework for airspace control and to derive benefits from it.

“There is no doubt about the need for close integration and cooperation regarding common standards, technologies, procedures, and the skills of personnel responsible for air traffic safety, commented the Polish MEP. He pointed out that the same applies to investments in new technologies and the digitization of the entire air traffic control system, in which the EU should be involved.

He cautioned, however, that this must not come at the expense of further stripping Member States of their powers. He said that although, as a result of negotiations, this draft is significantly better than the Commission’s original proposal, it still “represents a step toward greater centralization of power, albeit a much smaller and slower one than originally intended.”
