Today, at the European Parliament in Brussels, a discussion took place during a meeting of the Committee on Development (DEVE) with the participation of Jutta Urpilainen, Commissioner for International Partnerships. PiS MEP Małgorzata Gosiewska took the floor during the debate, asking, among other things, about the diversification of transport corridors from the European Union to China.
The Polish MEP asked Commissioner Urpilainen about the Global Gateway strategy and its main objective, which is to ensure sustainable global development by bridging the infrastructure connectivity gap.
Małgorzata Gosiewska also emphasized that while the Finnish politician’s extensive discussion of issues concerning Africa, Asia, and the Pacific are extremely important, she had almost completely overlooked issues concerning investments in the Eastern Partnership region and the diversification of transport corridors from the European Union to China. “The diversification of China-EU transport corridors should become part of our strategy,” Gosiewska emphasized. In this context, she asked whether political and financial support is being considered for the construction of the Trans-Caspian transport route—that is, a rail route running from the European Union (Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, and the Baltic states) through, among others, Ukraine, the South Caucasus countries, and Kazakhstan to China. “The advantage of this route would be bypassing Russia, thereby limiting its political influence,” she noted.
