During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, a debate took place on the situation in Venezuela. PiS MEP Małgorzata Gosiewska participated in the discussion and called for support for the opposition and civil society in that country.
Małgorzata Gosiewska noted that the situation in Venezuela is not much different from that in Belarus, where the usurper Alexander Lukashenko, ignoring the will of the voters, has maintained power by force, suppressed public dissent, and forced Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya—the de facto winner of the country’s presidential election—into exile. The Polish politician recalled that Europe was right not to recognize that act of violence and oppression at the time. She pointed out that the cooperation between the Russian and Belarusian regimes and the dictatorial regime in Venezuela shows just how deeply criminal systems can support one another. The MEP also recalled that Poles have experienced dictatorships many times and fully understand the pain and suffering resulting from authoritarian rule. “Let us therefore support the opposition and civil society in countries such as Venezuela, which are struggling with inhumane regimes that lead to misery and force millions of people to emigrate,” Małgorzata Gosiewska urged. She added that the citizens of Venezuela have the same aspirations, dreams, and rights as Europeans, as evidenced by their protests, demonstrations, and fight against election fraud. “Europe should stand in solidarity with all nations that yearn for a better future, freedom, and the rule of law,” the MEP argued. She noted that solidarity on such fundamental issues “is a test of our credibility as a community based on values and should not be subject to any political relativism.”
