During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, a debate took place on the repression of peaceful pro-European demonstrators. PiS MEP Małgorzata Gosiewska spoke during the discussion, which included the new head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas.
Małgorzata Gosiewska reported that thousands of Georgians are taking to the streets to protest the policies of Georgian Dream—a pro-Russian party that is pushing the country into Russia’s embrace. She stated that the arrests, violence, and the freezing of relations with the EU are the ruling party’s response aimed at the Georgian public. “The Georgian demonstrations are taking place under the slogan ‘Wake up, Georgia.’ And I say, wake up, Europe, and stand with the protesters!” said the MEP.
The MEP also asked Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, why she was not responding to the situation in Georgia. “Are you waiting until blood is shed and President Zurabishvili is imprisoned, just as was done to President Saakashvili?” the Polish politician asked.
Gosiewska also appealed to the head of EU diplomacy to take immediate action “since the list of individuals subject to sanctions is already ready.” She recalled that during the 2008 Russian-Georgian war, “the EU slept through it, and it was Polish President Lech Kaczyński who saved Georgia’s independence and Europe’s honor at that time.” In this regard, she emphasized the need to learn from history and make decisive decisions without undue delay. “Georgians believe in the strength of the European Union and are fighting for their future. Let’s help them!” she urged.
