A debate on the European Investment Bank’s financial activities in 2024 took place in Strasbourg during a plenary session of the European Parliament. PiS MEP Marlena Maląg spoke during the discussion.
Marlena Maląg said that the European Investment Bank is an “essential, effective, and, until now, apolitical” institution. As she emphasized, its role in supporting investment, particularly in the “newer” EU member states, is invaluable, serving as a pillar of cohesion policy and a driving force for integration.
The PiS MEP noted, however, that the EIB is under constant political pressure; it is expected not only to align with the EU’s strategic goals but also with the Commission’s current agenda and the priorities of the parliamentary majority. “Let’s remember that a ‘triple-A’ rating isn’t granted once and for all; it’s based on trust, which is easily lost,” the Polish politician warned.
The PiS MEP quoted Ronald Reagan’s famous words: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” and appealed: “Let’s not ruin the reputation of one of the last EU institutions that enjoys the trust of the markets.”
Marlena Maląg stated that it is the European Commission’s green policy under its current leadership that is causing the pressure threatening the EIB’s credibility.
“The Commission needs new leadership—one that is independent and respects the sovereignty of member states and EU institutions. NO to Ursula von der Leyen’s policies!” she emphasized.
