During a debate in the European Parliament on the situation in northernand the need to maintain a lasting ceasefire, PiS MEPs Adam Bielan and Arkadiusz Mularczyk drew attention to the growing threats to European security and the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Adam Bielan emphasized that the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024 ended five decades of Russian-backed authoritarianism, but did not bring about stability. “The power vacuum in Syria is now being filled by scattered armed groups, and the leader of the interim government, Ahmed al-Sharaa—who comes from a Sunni Islamist background—has not distanced himself from his past ties to Al-Qaeda. The threat posed by ISIS and jihadists with EU citizenship is real and directly affects Europe,” said Bielan.
Arkadiusz Mularczyk, in turn, pointed out that the Syrian crisis is the result of both mistakes made by international actors and Russia’s intervention, which, through massive bombing campaigns, has exacerbated the chaos and the humanitarian tragedy. “Currently, religiously motivated violence and clashes with the Kurds have led to the displacement of thousands of people, increasing migratory pressure on Europe. Fugitive jihadists pose a serious threat to our security, which is why an immediate and effective ceasefire is needed. Europe must protect its borders and cooperate with the United States, a key player in the region,” Mularczyk emphasized.
Both MEPs unequivocally condemned the attacks on religious minorities—particularly Christians, but also Druze, Alawites, and Kurds—calling for decisive action to defend human rights and regional stability.
